Nestled against the stunning background of Cape Coast, Ghana, ‘Water & Garri’ explores Aisha’s journey of self-realization and peacemaking as she faces a changed country rife with rising bloodshed and underlying strife. The story follows Aisha as she navigates her history, makes new connections with family and friends, and faces the ghosts of her past love, according to a press release that accompanied the announcement.
A few months ago, Tiwa Savage shared her excitement about the movie on Prime Video, characterizing the process from its conception to its worldwide release as the fulfillment of a lifelong goal. She said, “I’ve been working on this project for years; it’s a labor of love. I was able to express myself and go into a vulnerable place while playing Aisha that I had never gone into before.”
‘Water & Garri’ is a reference to Savage’s five-track EP from 2021, which was highly praised and included collaborations with musicians including Tay Iwar, Rich King, Nas, Amaarae, and Brandy.
The 2020 release of Tiwa Savage’s previous full-length album, “Celia,” saw it debut at No. 15 on the Billboard World Albums chart. Her song “100 Million” featuring ODUMODUBLVCK was featured in Billboard’s Afrobeats Fresh Picks column just a month ago.
