Finidi George will be formally introduced as the Super Eagles’ new head coach by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) on Monday in Abuja.
Senator John Owan Enoh, the minister’s permanent secretary, Mrs. Tinuke Watti, the NFF president Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau, and Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, the general secretary of the NFF, are among those anticipated to attend the event.
The two-time CAF Champions League champion Enyimba FC, led by George, turned down the chance to coach a lower division team in Spain in order to return to Nigeria and win the tough-as-nails Nigeria elite division title with the People’s Elephant in his second season. With six games remaining in the season, the club has a chance to retain the title.
With 53 points from 32 games, Enyimba FC was still in third place on the NPFL standings four points behind leaders Enugu Rangers and three behind second-place Remo Stars when George publicly announced his departure from the Aba giants a few days ago.
The 52-year-old assisted Portuguese coach José Peseiro for 20 months starting in the summer of 2022. During that time, the Super Eagles qualified for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and, three months ago in Cote d’Ivoire, came within a hair’s breadth of winning a fourth African championship.
George, who competed in two FIFA World Cup finals and earned 62 caps for Nigeria at the senior level, has been tasked with selecting the maximum number of points from the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against South Africa (home) and Benin Republic (away) in the coming weeks.
