With every successive release, Nollywood pioneer Anthill Studios continues to push the envelope. Using state-of-the-art visual effects (VFX) and computer-generated imagery (CGI) to enhance the watching experience, “Casa De Novia” continues this legacy.
Even if it might not reach the same heights as earlier Anthill Studio masterpieces like “House Of Secrets,” the movie nonetheless offers its viewers a fun ride.
The protagonist of the tale is Yoyo, who moves into a new flat only to learn disturbing facts about it, setting off a string of humorous and daring adventures. With a nod to genre-bending movies like “Banana Island Ghost,” “Casa De Novia” seeks to achieve a nuanced tension between comedy and suspense.
The picture shines due to its fine attention to detail and the cast’s excellent performances. With Taye Arimoro, Efe Irele, and Lillian Esoro as backup, Anee Icha steals the show as Yoyo, charmingly and effortlessly delivering comedy. The humorous components are engaging throughout, even with the characters’ sporadic lack of realism and common sense.
Nevertheless, “Casa De Novia” struggles to tell a coherent story at times, with fragmented or unfocused scenes. Although the premise is intriguing at first, the major plot takes some time to completely develop, leaving viewers wondering about its main topic. However, as the narrative picks up steam, it transforms into a fun trip full of surprises and giggles.
A notable achievement of the movie is how well the VFX and CGI are integrated into the narrative, enhancing it rather than overshadowing it. The overall visual level is commendable, despite the few occasions where the illusion falters, particularly in sequences with digital settings.
In terms of performances, Taye Arimoro receives praise for his deft handling of multiple roles and his ability to consistently navigate the complexities of his characters. The picture gains additional appeal from Anee Icha’s charm, which turns her into an endearing heroine whose antics keep viewers interested throughout.
Although it has its flaws, “Casa De Novia” stands as a commendable endeavor from Anthill Studios, providing a light-hearted cinematic journey filled with laughter. While it may not achieve the same level of excellence as some of the studio’s past creations, it still reflects the evolving landscape of Nollywood and the creative prowess driving it forward.
Currently available for streaming on Prime Video, the movie earns a 5/10 rating. It may not be a top pick when you have your favorite shows lined up, but it offers an enjoyable diversion nonetheless.
