Nigerian vocalist Yemi Alade chastises her peers for continuously criticizing the Afrobeat genre and exhorts them to quietly build their own.
The singer said on the X platform that it is OK for an artist to inform their fans about the genre of their music.
It is hypocritical, according to her, to downplay the influence Afrobeat has had on the growth of all musicians.
She continued by accusing Nigerians of ignoring the country’s actual problems in favor of endorsing musicians who denigrate themselves online.
In her own words: “I find no problem with disclosing to your audience an artist’s musical genre, particularly if you believe it doesn’t fully define your work.
Just state your genre in a calm manner. It is hypocritical to minimize the influence Afrobeats has had on the growth of every artist.
