Sam Sodje has issued a warning, stating that the Super Eagles’ chances of making it to the 2026 FIFA World Cup may be compromised by the inaction on the appointment of a new head coach.
The team’s pivotal qualifiers against South Africa and Benin are in less than two months, but the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has not yet appointed a new head coach.
Five-time Nigerian cap winner Sodje stressed how important it is that the NFF complete the selection of a new coach for the three-time African champions as soon as possible.
We’re getting too near, I think. Not having a manager in place doesn’t bode well, especially given it’s international football, Sodje said in an interview with Sports 247. There are just a few months left before the World Cup qualifiers.
He emphasized the need of proper preparation for such important games and outlined the difficulties faced by coaches in international football, where they have less time to work with players than in club football.
Jose Peseiro, the former coach, left his post in February when his contract expired. The front-runners for the coaching position are Emmanuel Amuneke and Finidi George, who guided the squad in previous friendlies against Ghana and Mali.
