US President Joe Biden claimed at a campaign event that the “xenophobic” policies of China, Russia, and some US allies, like Japan and India, are the reason behind their economic difficulties.
“China’s economy is experiencing severe stagnation. What is wrong with Japan? What is wrong with Russia? What about India, then? They despise foreigners. They oppose immigration,” Mr. Biden said on May 1. On May 2, a transcript of his words was made public.
During a campaign fund-raising event in Washington, the 81-year-old Democrat delivered these remarks on the first day of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islanders Heritage Month. Delivering the statement, US presidential candidate Biden is running for reelection in November against Republican challenger Donald Trump.
Such events are not recorded on film or by other recording equipment, but a few journalists are there to write stories of them.
“People such as yourself and countless others have contributed to the expansion of our economy. Why? since we welcome immigrants,” the US President said.
Even though the US considers China and Russia to be enemies, Mr. Biden’s remarks about Japan and India were surprising.
Mr. Biden has placed a high priority on strengthening ties with important Asian allies, particularly Tokyo and New Delhi, since taking office in 2021.
He has offered to organize state dinners for Prime Ministers Narendra Modi of India and Fumio Kishida of Japan, a rare example of diplomatic outreach.
The US President’s remarks on May 2 were intended to be minimized by the White House.
“The President’s overarching message, which is universally understood, is that the United States is a nation founded by immigrants, which is a fundamental component of our identity,” National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby told reporters.
He said, “Our allies are acutely aware of the President’s deep respect for them, his appreciation of their friendship, and his acknowledgment of their valuable contributions.” AFP
