Music and sports has been used interchangeably to entertain spectators in the game of football, especially during the opening or closing ceremony of a tournament or competition.
Over the past few decades, we’ve seen lots of famous musical artists around the world performing in football biggest events like the FIFA World Cup, Africa Cup of nations, and the UEFA Champions League. Artists like Shakira, Ricky Martin and more have set the World Cup stage on fire and interestingly, some Nigerian singers has join that fit to perform at football’s biggest stage.
In this article, we’ve compelled a list of Nigerian musicians who have and will perform at football’s biggest events like the FIFA World Cup, Africa Cup of nations, and the UEFA Champions League, check list below;
1. D’banj (Oladapo Daniel Oyebanjo).
Nigerian award winning singer, D’banj set the stage on fire in the closing ceremony of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations tournament. The superstar performed one of his hits “Top of The World”, it serves as the fifth single from the album D’kings Men, a collaboration between members of D’banj’s label DB Records.
“Top of The World” was the official supersport anthem for the 2013 Africa Nations Cup. Interestingly, after the performance, D’banj became the first Nigerian musician to perform in football’s major events, that same year Nigeria won the AFCON tournament.
2. Davido (David Adeleke).
In 2022, Davido joined a crew of seven others to deliver a top notch performance in Qatar. The award-winning Nigerian singer joined force with Aisha, Ozuna, Gims, Nora Fathi, Rahma Riad and Manal to deliver a 10-minutes performance in the closing ceremony of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
Davido performed the official soundtrack of the 2022 FIFA World Cup to set a record as the first-ever Nigerian musician to perform on a world cup stage.
3. BurnaBoy (Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu).
Nigerian global music star, Burnaboy will perform in the closing ceremony of the 2022/23 UEFA Champions League final that will take place at the Istanbul’s Ataturk Olympic stadium. The Grammy award winner (Burnaboy) will be the first Nigerian to ever perform in a european football competition. He will co-headline the 2023 UEFA Champions League final kick-off show by Pepsi, at the Ataturk Olympic stadium in Istanbul on Saturday, 10 June.
Burnaboy will now join Davido to appear in one of football most popular and biggest events whilst interestingly becoming the only two Nigerians to ever perform in the FIFA World Cup, and UEFA Champions League respectively.
