Conjunctivitis, also referred to as red eye infection, is a regular occurrence in Uganda, according to the Ministry of Health, with Kampala City inhabitants being most affected.
Red eye has been declared an outbreak in city schools by the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), and over 5,000 prisoners have been diagnosed with the condition by Uganda Prison Services.
Although allergic reactions or partially opened tear ducts in infants can sometimes be the reason, viral or bacterial infections are the most common causes of conjunctivitis.
Red eye can spread in a number of ways:
- Close contact with an infected individual, such as handshakes or touches.
- Contact with germ- or virus-contaminated surfaces, then contacting the eyes before washing your hands.
- Utilizing shared or outdated eye makeup that is tainted with viruses or bacteria.
- Through sex.
- In order to manage and avoid conjunctivitis:
- Before using a fresh cotton wool pad to gently cleanse the eyelashes and remove crusts, bring water to a boil and let it cool (use one pad for each eye).
- For several minutes, cover your eyes with a cold towel.Wash your hands frequently, especially after touching your eyes.
