The CEO of TikTok, Shou Zi Chew, has responded to the rule that states that if the Chinese-owned social media network is not sold within nine months, it will be banned in the US.
Recall that US President Joe Biden signed a foreign aid package into law on Wednesday, which stipulates that TikTok will be prohibited in the US if it isn’t sold within nine months.
CEO Chew replied, “The app isn’t going anywhere,” in a video message posted on the platform.
The new law was political, he said.
You can be sure that Chew and I are staying put.
“This is a ban, without a doubt. It applies to both you and your voice on TikTok. Politicians might argue differently. But avoid becoming perplexed.
He went on, “It’s truly amusing since the American values that made the United States a beacon of freedom are reflected in the freedom of expression on TikTok. TikTok provides a strong platform for regular Americans to be seen and heard.
“We will keep fighting for your rights in the courts,” the TikTok CEO continued. We anticipate winning since the evidence and the Constitution support our position.
In 2020, TikTok defeated former President Donald Trump in court when he attempted to use an executive order to force the sale of the app, threatening to forbid any US-based transactions with ByteDance if the firm did not divest the app within 45 days.
