Ugezu Ugezu, a seasoned actor and director, has addressed the alarming incidence of fatalities in the Nigerian film business.
The death of more than five performers in the first quarter of 2024—Mr. Ibu, Amaechi Muonagor, Sisi Quadri, Adejumoke Aderounmu, and most recently Junior Pope—has fans wondering if Nollywood is in trouble. This is according to RAWLOADED.
Ugezu explained that the scenario should not be characterized as a Nollywood tragedy, as some have suggested, on his Instagram page. He clarified that every week, people in a variety of vocations face death.
Ugezu said, “If only people were aware of the startling number of bankers who die every week, the police officers who die every month, the pastors and priests who die every month, or if we had accurate data on citizens who die every month, maybe we could understand the systematic collapse of the health system.
“Because entertainers are well-known to the public, news of their passing is constantly forthcoming. It’s time to set spirituality apart from blatant flaws in the system. Contrary to popular belief, this crisis extends beyond Nollywood. The entire system is being impacted by this issue.”
