Nollywood actress Etinosa Idemudia has offered some guidance on taking criticism and drawing parallels, especially when one’s career is just getting started.
The actress underlined the importance of listening to one’s own voice and care when taking advice from others.
Etinosa Idemudia disclosed the details during a visit on Arise TV. She explained that instead of imitating actress Adesua Etomi’s “razz, Benin” dialect, she was told to take on a more “serious” manner.
She mentioned the following regarding her trip, the lesson she ultimately discovered, and the influence that advice had on her.
As per Etinosa Idemudia’s statement:
My folks, simply pay attention to your spirit in life. You may get into issues in life if you take too much advice. Some Nollywood filmmakers used to ask me questions like, “Why are you doing comedy?” and “Why are you doing skits?” or, “You look like Adesua, be doing roles like Adesua,” when I was receiving a lot of attention. You must conduct properly and be well-groomed. When I did it with my Benin accent at the time, they asked me, “Why are you doing razz things?” You’re too good at humor. Then they brought up a few female comedians that seemed to suit the bill, but I need to start doing packaging and picture shoots and stop trying to “mumu” myself.
I was therefore really confused and at odds with myself at the time, trying to decide whether or not to package and speak in English. Or should I continue to speak with a razz accent? I thus took a little break. I declared that I would never perform skits again. All I’m going to do is work in Nollywood. Even several of my coworkers from that era, who I wanted to include in my sketches, told me, “No, I want to be a serious actor.” I’m not acting in a skit. I want no producer to believe that I’m not a serious person.
But take a look at those same individuals in 2024. Everyone who told me not to do it is now performing skits. What a hypocrite! Thus, when you’re developing, pay no attention to anyone! Simply trust in God for your future and ask Him for inspiration for your own thoughts. I’m doing all I want to do right now, including my serious films and skits. I’m delivering my stories in my own unique style without interruptions.
