An investigation of the recent increase in energy rates in 11 Nigerian states was launched by the Senate on Monday.
The National Assembly’s Senate branch parliamentarians swear to punish any individual or organization that they determine is responsible for increasing the hardships and sufferings of Nigerians.
Adebayo Adelabu, the minister of power, and the heads of the ministry’s agencies were invited to an investigative hearing on the new electricity rates last week by the Senate’s committee on power.
The Senate has already approved an inquiry hearing “scheduled for the 29th of April, 2024,” according to committee chairman Senator Eyinnaya Ababribe. Questions will be addressed by the main government agencies.
“The National Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has been summoned,” he declared. They are welcome to discuss the increase in electricity rates. It goes without saying that the minister of power will also be present.
The Senate’s resolutions, which required the Committee on Power to “engage with the Federal Ministry of Power, Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission and other stakeholders,” were the basis for the two motions that were presented at plenary on Tuesday, July 25, 2023, and Wednesday, February 21, 2024, according to the committee chairman speaking at the hearing on Monday.
According to Abaribe, the committee’s task was to come up with long-term fixes for the problems the Nigerian electricity industry was facing, including the requirement for “comprehensive sector reforms.”
