Bella Okagbue, star of BBNaija, advises parents in Nigeria on the value of working hard for the future of their kids.
The reality TV celebrity draws attention to the widespread practice among many Nigerians of concentrating only on taking advantage of and making money off of other people’s riches, regardless of where it comes from, in a post on the microblogging site X.
She laments the disturbing reality that a person’s financial situation mostly determines their social status and draws attention to the startlingly high incidence of illegal employment in the modern world.
Bella says she doesn’t want to raise her kids in a culture where getting married without providing proof of income is normal. She counsels parents to work hard so that their children will value love over money when they get married.
She also stresses the significance of teaching children contentment so they won’t compromise their morals in the face of difficulty.
“Ninety-nine percent of Nigerians show little concern for the origins of wealth,” is a message that strikes a chord. Whatever the veracity of your success, their only goal is to hype it up and profit from it. Unfortunately, participating in illegal activity appears to be accepted in today’s culture. It depresses me that riches is equated with importance according to the current quo. I won’t raise my kids in a setting where they would think it’s okay to violate morals for one’s own benefit or wed somebody whose financial sources are dubious. Working hard is essential if we want to give our kids the best chances possible and make sure they marry for love, not need. They won’t connect with particular lifestyles or unfavorable associations in this way. Above all, in order for them to stay grounded, we need to teach them contentment.”
