At the age of 84, Sir Chips Keswick, the former chairman of Arsenal, passed away.
A prosperous merchant banker, Keswick initially joined the Gunners board in 2005 as a director and then assumed the role of chairman in 2013. Although he continued to have an interest in the club, he held that position until retiring in May 2020.
“The club reports with great sadness the passing of Sir Chips Keswick, the former chairman,” said a statement from the club. A devoted lifelong Arsenal fan, he first appeared in the boys’ enclosure at Highbury in 1949. Among his early idols were the Compton brothers and Jimmy Logie, but most importantly, when Chips was a little schoolboy, goalkeeper George Swindin went on to become manager.
The Gunners won four FA Cups and finished second in the Premier League, Europa League, and Carabao Cup during Keswick’s tenure as chairman.
