Grammy-nominated artist Seun Kuti recently said that because of his kind attitude, his legendary father Fela Kuti did not leave him any fortune.
Even though Seun Kuti’s daily stipend as a student was greater than his teacher’s pay, he clarified that his father’s priority was to support the approximately one thousand people living in his Kalakuta community.
Seun Kuti considered his father’s charitable legacy in a video that he shared on Instagram.
“We had roughly 500 people staying in our home when Fela was the biggest performer in Nigeria. Fela used all the money I was supposed to inherit to provide for people.
“Everyone in Kalakuta was paid a weekly salary in addition to a daily allowance. Kalakuta as well as [African] shrine. Nearly a thousand individuals. They were craftspeople. Every profession was represented in Kalakuta.
“I had N100 in pocket money every day for primary school in 1990. My daily pocket money exceeded my teacher’s pay.
