The Lagos State Government reaffirmed its intention to destroy buildings that don’t pass integrity inspections.
This was underlined by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu after 14 structures next to the ones that were on fire at Lagos Island’s Dosunmu Market collapsed.
He emphasized that other structures are in danger due to the conversion of several residential units into warehouses. First responders’ delayed entry to the fire, which has lasted for more than 48 hours, has angered Sanwo-Olu.
As of right now, we’ve pinpointed about 14 houses that are affected, and others may still be under evaluation.
Sanwo-Olu said at the scene of the fire, “What I’ve witnessed here could have been prevented,” highlighting the importance of exercising prudence.
The government promises assistance to the impacted traders, but Dosunmu Market will remain closed indefinitely. Sanwo-Olu reiterated its dedication to tearing down non-compliant buildings while putting safety first.
Though he helped individuals impacted, he regretted spending money on avoidable accidents instead of forward-thinking projects.
