Made In Chelsea have hired a ‘Queer Expert’ to oversee a TV first – a gay throuple storyline.
Channel 4 bosses consulted the specialist to ensure sensitivities surrounding the groundbreaking plot were met in a bid to nullify any potential Ofcom complaints from viewers.
The show’s stars Joel Mignott, 27, Robbie Mullett, 23, and newcomer Geronimo Mörtl, 22, decided to bring their three-way relationship to the real-life drama and the new series filmed in Corsica will screen an intimate kissing scene involving the trio.
‘Made In Chelsea’ to become first UK show to broadcast three-way
In a reality TV first, the upcoming season, which begins on Sunday, will explore the dynamic of a three-way relationship, with model Joel saying Channel 4 have done their utmost to ensure the personal storyline is portrayed in the best possible light.
Joel told MailOnline: ‘I am not apprehensive about Ofcom complaints because Channel 4 have done everything they can to help us through this process.
‘We even had a queer specialist who was consulting us on any emotional struggles we were going through while filming the series and afterwards.
‘The channel has endeavoured to really be on our side in this storyline. If other people have negative complaints, then I don’t care because Channel 4 have worked with us tirelessly to portray this story in the best possible light.
‘Being a gay person, you are more prepared for trolling because you are in the minority. I don’t read the comments… my mum does. But Robbie and I are in this together, so we have got each other’s backs.’
The new E4 series sees the cast of glamorous reality stars take to Corsica in France, where they lived together for six weeks in several villas.
Joel and Robbie, who are in a committed relationship, met single model Geronimo and they established a romantic connection.
During one scene, Joel and Robbie kiss each other and then Geronimo as the couple explored their sexual boundaries with the cameras rolling.
Joel explained that their attraction begun as friendship, but their ‘sweet’ bond grew into sexual chemistry, which they decided to act on.
He said: ‘It was a friendship at first. We took it slow, there was never any pressure to do anything. We would ask, “are you okay with this?”
‘It was very slow, very sweet, very communicative. There were moments where we would stop and chat. It wasn’t just about the sex but what it all meant to us.
‘Robbie loved flirting with somebody and having someone around us that was interested in us and getting to know somebody new in a safe space.’
Made In Chelsea became the first reality series to screen a same-sex wedding after Ollie Locke and husband Gareth got married in 2020.
Ollie also discovered his sexuality on the show, later coming out as gay, and the couple are now expecting twins together, after documenting their emotional journey with surrogacy.
Following Ollie and Gareth’s departure from Made In Chelsea, Joel hopes the throuple storyline will give the gay community an example of a relationship with a different dynamic.
