The new national identity card is a single, multipurpose card, not three different cards, as the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has made clear.
This was verified by Kayode Adegoke, Head of Corporate Communications at NIMC, in a statement headlined “Key Facts About the Proposed New General Multipurpose National Identity Card.”
The commission stated on April 5 that it would be working with the Nigerian Central Bank and the Nigeria Interbank Settlement System to launch a new card that would allow users to pay for a range of social and financial services.
The press release stated, “The new national ID card is a single, convenient, and general multipurpose card, eliminating the need for multiple cards—contrary to previous speculation of three separate cards.”
“The single General Multipurpose Card (GMPC) offers various applications including payments/financial transactions, access to government intervention/services, travel, and more.”
Applicants can use their National Identification Number (NIN) to request the card using the self-service web portal, NIMC offices, or their banks, according to the commission. Furthermore, the card will be issued by the applicants’ banks in accordance with the established procedures for credit and debit card issuance.
