The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has disclosed that certain people are impersonating their employees in order to provide fraudulent National Identity Numbers (NINs) to gullible Nigerians.
This was revealed by NIMC Director General Abisoye Coker-Odusote on Friday in an Abuja news briefing.
A few of the offenders have been taken into custody and are being prosecuted by the appropriate security services, according to the NIMC.
During the meeting, Odusote also revealed that, of the 104 million Nigerians registered in December 2023, over 107.34 million had been added to the NIN database as of May 2023.
Each individual is allocated a unique NIN, which has become increasingly important in recent years as the focal point of a number of government projects meant to improve security, governance, and service delivery.
The Director General described their strategy in detail, saying that these people pose as internet cafés and commercial vendors while creating software, creating links for gullible people, and creating fictitious NINs. “Many Nigerians fall prey to scams as a result of this data not reaching our server,” the spokesperson claimed.
She said that following an additional crackdown, a group of people were found near the company’s annex office.
