Finidi George, the new head coach of the Super Eagles, has been given a mandate by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to guarantee the team’s qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The three-time African champions have drawn both of their matches against Lesotho and Zimbabwe, placing them third in their group right now.
On Friday, June 7, Nigeria will play host to the South African Bafana Bafana before traveling to Benin to play the Squirrels a few days later.
Ikpeba, a member of the NFF technical committee, told SuperSport that Nigeria would play the games of their lives against South Africa and Benin in June.
“We need to win the following games because we are in a vulnerable position after drawing our first two World Cup qualifying matches.
“We will qualify for the World Cup if Finidi can get the best performance out of our players.”
Ikpeba added that the incoming coach will be expected to provide Nigerian football players with a better opportunity to play for the Super Eagles.
He said, “He works here as the coach of NPFL champions Enyimba, and he lives here.”
“In his squad, he’ll give the local players an opportunity.
“We got the player Finidi George; he will have to look inwards.”
