Reno Omokri, a popular figure on social media, has expressed strong opinions that no African should ever choose an English name, and one of his followers recently asked him directly whether or not his name, Reno, is indeed Nigerian.
In response to Unchenna’s remark, Reno stated that:
Reno is a Nigerian given name. To be precise, it is an Itsekiri name. My grandpa, the late Olu Ikemgbuwa II, also known as Prince Moju, gave it to me. I also go by four additional Itsekiri names besides Reno.
I can also converse with you in Itsekiri without using English. And mind you, I first became a resident in California in 1983, at the age of 9.
He also added that:
My entire family has Itsekiri names, with the exception of my youngest child, who was given an Igbo name.
Reno is a man who always find time to interact with his fans, this alone has cleared the questions of so many followers and God will continue to bless his handwork towards making Nigeria a better place.
Thank you and may God bless you.
