Nigerian singer, Iyanya shared on Twitter how his hit song “Ur waist” came to be and his failed attempt to collaborate with Nicki Minaj. He explained that after the success of his hit song “Kukere,” they had pressure to release a new single, and they had “Flavour” already produced and recorded, but they felt it wasn’t the right song to follow “Kukere.” So, they decided to remake “Kukere” into a new song called “Ur waist.”
Iyanya also mentioned that they wanted to make “Ur waist” an international hit, and his manager suggested collaborating with Nicki Minaj. They were able to find a contact who claimed to know Nicki Minaj and asked them to fly to Atlanta for a meeting with him, which led to meetings with R Kelly and 2chains, among other celebrities.
However, when it came time to discuss the collaboration with Nicki Minaj, they were told they needed $200,000 to get her on a verse. They managed to raise $70,000, but it was not enough, and they felt disappointed after spending money on tickets, hotels, food, and car hire services. They even tried to take pictures with Nicki Minaj to show their “chairmen” that they could raise the money, but they were not allowed. In the end, they returned to Nigeria and continued their hustle.
According to Daily Trust, Iyanya told his fans that the venture cost him and his manager, Ubi Franklin at least N23,000 (10,683,500.00). However, their journey to Atlanta for the collaboration was fruitless.
