In an attempt to surpass the Guinness World Record for the longest chess marathon at Times Square in New York, famous chess master Tunde Onakoya has garnered the support of numerous Nigerians both domestically and overseas, including former vice president Atiku Abubakar.
Onakoya announced the start of the marathon on Wednesday via his X account, captioning it, “Game time.” He added, “Nigerians are already trooping into camp out with me, and we haven’t even started yet.”
Atiku tweeted on Thursday from his X profile that he was in favor of Onakoya’s ground-breaking project. Then he said, “Hi @Tunde_OD, As millions of Nigerians throughout the world support you in your endeavor to shatter the Guinness World Record for the Longest Chess Marathon, I hope you succeed. Your steadfast perseverance has been incredibly motivating so far. I’m rooting for you to have extraordinary success. -AA.”
Likewise, Onakoya’s attempt to shatter the record for the longest chess marathon held by Guinness World Record has the support of Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. He said on X, “Every significant triumph begins with a single, audacious move, much like a daring gambit—a bold step towards redefining boundaries.”
As you work to break the Guinness World Record for the longest chess marathon at Times Square in New York City, @Tunde_OD, Lagos is fully behind you.
“Transcending the boundaries of your remarkable work initiated in Lagos with young minds onto a global platform showcases the profound potential for greatness to arise from any corner.”
