Actress and filmmaker Toyin Abraham of Nollywood has offered her colleague Funke Akindele a helping hand.
In Nigeria, the two have the greatest competition at the box office.
Abraham said in a lengthy Instagram post that rumors caused them to become “competitors and persona non grata.”
She remembered how their competition started in the Yoruba film industry and how it transferred to Nollywood, the Nigerian-English film industry.
But Abraham claimed that wisdom and experience have shown her that they can compete without becoming detrimentally competitive.
“In the English industry, Aunty Funke and I kind of continued the rivalry,” the writer said. It created a rivalry between our fans. We are two Virgo ladies who are competitive and love to win, even if it means splattering muck and grime on the floor. But as we’ve become older and wiser, I’ve come to see that we may compete without becoming harmfully competitive.
“Aunty Funke, thank you for demonstrating to us what is possible. You’ve won. You made it possible for other women to dream by selling more than $1 billion. We hope God grows you bigger because many of us are moving to 1B this year after you ran us over with that 1B vehicle.
I appreciate you producing excellent films and pushing them as if your life depended on it. You inspired other ladies to put forth more effort.
“I am happy today because Aunty challenged me to set higher goals. I had set records in box office records, and she beat me.” Sis, let’s support one another even while we are competing at the box office.
I owe you a single post in December (only one, because I have to sell the market, haha). I ask God to grant you the desires of your heart. I think highly of you and hope the best for you.
