Nigerian artist Fireboy DML said that the Afrobeats genre does not suit his style of music. He did, nonetheless, stress how his “roots and identity” are deeply rooted in his music.
The “Peru” singer discussed his observations when appearing as a guest on the most recent “B And N” podcast episode on Amazon Music.
“I’ve always maintained that I don’t create Afrobeats,” he clarified. I combine different components. Pop or R&B, you can still feel the Yoruba spirit.”
He went on to say, “My music carries unmistakable traces of my Nigerian heritage, distinguishing it from American or British styles.”
Fireboy stressed that Nigerian musicians should take advantage of their increased international visibility and concentrate on developing their home music scene.
He said, “We’ve come to a place where Afrobeats is really taking off over the world. What should we do now? In my opinion, we shouldn’t focus too much on the idea that “Afrobeats saved the world.” We’re creating waves already. Prior to the Grammy introducing an African category, we had accomplished something noteworthy. The viability of the genre for the future needs to be prioritized, and we currently need to set up a strong framework.”
