The proposal for direct elections to the ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States) parliament has received support from President Bola Tinubu.
By giving them a say in choosing their representatives, Tinubu thinks that this strategy will empower the people living in member nations.
Speaking on the matter at the 97th ECOWAS parliament swearing-in ceremony held at the Abuja International Conference Centre, Tinubu said, “As a former legislator myself, we stand ready to support the direct elections into the ECOWAS parliament.” He indicated his expectation to examine the proposal.
Against the backdrop of the ECOWAS parliament, which consists of present legislators from the 15 member states, he made his remarks.
The president pointed out, “The tradition of directly electing public officials is in harmony with democratic principles, principles that Nigeria staunchly supports.”
He added that the spirit of the ECOWAS protocol on democracy and good governance is aligned with this principle.
“We are confident that this will guarantee citizens’ direct involvement in their representation, enhancing both legitimacy and credibility,” said he.
He gave members of the sixth ECOWAS Parliament the assurance that Nigeria, the community’s host nation, “will persist in supporting you to accomplish your goals.”
