Desiree Ellis admitted that women’s football in South Africa has suffered as a result of Banyana Banyana’s failure to make it to the Olympics.
They were held to a goalless draw by Nigeria on Tuesday night in Pretoria, despite being the African champions. They couldn’t progress with this result since the Super Falcons had won the first leg in Abuja last week by a score of 1-0.
“It’s a huge letdown for all of us involved in women’s football, not just for us. In 2020, we were in a similar predicament where we had plenty of chances but couldn’t advance to the next round. Ellis added, “It is disappointing to lose out on the Olympics as a result of this setback, and it will take time to recover.
Banyana Banyana will now turn their attention to defending their WAFCON title this summer after their Olympic dreams were crushed.
