Fears of casualties were raised on Wednesday when a car crashed off the Third Mainland Bridge and into the Lagos lagoon.
Eyewitness Akinola Adeniyi, who saw an unidentifiable vehicle heading from Iyana-Oworo to the Island abruptly tumble into the lagoon, apparently due to excessive speeding by the driver, described the incident as happening at around 11:30 am.
Rescue activities have been carried out quickly by emergency response teams, which include members of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and the Police. Traffic is backed up on the Third Mainland Bridge as it approaches the Island as a result of the collision.
The fact that LASEMA is still in the process of identifying the people responsible for the accident, according to a source within the organization, speaks to the continuous nature of the response operations.
