Bobrisky, a popular Nigerian crossdresser, has appealed against his six-month conviction for abusing the naira. He filed the appeal in a Lagos court, seeking a fine instead of imprisonment.
Bobrisky’s lawyer argued that the trial judge erred in law and facts by imposing the maximum sentence of six months imprisonment without an option of fine, which the law permits for first-time offenders.
The appeal asked the Court of Appeal to replace the sentence with a fine of N50,000 on each of the counts. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had charged Bobrisky with six counts of money laundering and naira abuse, but the court struck out the money laundering charges and convicted him of four counts of abusing the naira, to which he pleaded guilty.
