Bobrisky, real name Idris Okuneye, was given a six-month prison sentence by the Federal High Court in Lagos. The sentence of imprisonment was imposed without the possibility of a fine by Justice Abimbola Awogboro, who delivered the verdict.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) now in charge of Bobrisky, a contentious individual and social media celebrity, following his recent arrest.
The anti-graft agency filed accusations against Bobrisky on April 5, and he later admitted guilt to four counts of Naira misuse. The arrest was based on currency abuse.
Justice Awogboro highlighted in her verdict on Friday that “the practice of defacing the Naira notes has become a serious problem, tarnishing the reputation of the nation.”
“There needs to be an end to people tampering with and damaging our currency,” she said. This decision will serve as a cautionary tale to others.”
Judge Awogboro then condemned Bobrisky to six months in prison without the chance of earning a fine.
The period of incarceration will begin on the day that he is taken into custody.
