The Federal Airport Authority (FAAN) has canceled all flight operations from Murtala Muhammed Airport terminal 1 to the airport’s D wing due to a fire issue.
In an attempt to put out the fire that began at 5:29 a.m. on Thursday, FAAN stated in a statement that the airport’s engineers had turned off the electricity to the entire E wing.
The E54 bridge burst in smoke, which finally turned into fire, according to the statement issued by Obiageli Orah, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection. PUNCH Online learned that this development resulted in tension at the airport.
After several airport employees and visitors took to their heels, FAAN and the Airport Rescue and Firefighting Services team were reported to have brought peace back to the area.
The statement says, “Electrical engineers promptly turned off power to the entire E Wing after detecting smoke rising from the E54 Bridge.
“The team from Airport Rescue and Firefighting Services (ARFFS) responded promptly, reaching the location around 5:30 p.m. Although sparks from an electrical unit are suspected to be the source of the incident, a full investigation is still underway to determine the exact reason.
By 06:41 hrs, the incident—which had grown into a fire—was under control. There is now work being done to ventilate the building’s smoke. All flight operations in MMA’s Terminal 1 have been moved to the D Wing in the meantime. We’ll release more information soon.
