The judge, who was assaulted by a defendant in a Las Vegas courtroom last week, sentenced her attacker on Monday, Jan. 8, to 19 months to four years in prison for an unrelated case.
Deobra Delone Redden, 30, leaped over the bench and assaulted Clark County District Court Judge Mary Kay Holthus in her courtroom last week. He had previously tried to persuade the judge that he was reforming from his violent past.
The sentence on Jan. 8 was related to a baseball bat attack on an individual the previous year. In order to prevent a repeat of the attack, Redden appeared in court in restraints, wearing a face mask, and was accompanied by a group of jail officers.
Before the recent assault, Redden had requested leniency from the judge, portraying himself as “a person who never stops trying to do the right thing no matter how hard it is.” As it became evident that Holthus would impose a prison sentence, Redden, now in shackles, began shouting expletives and charged forward. Courtroom audience members began to scream as he had to be restrained by court and jail officers, as well as courtroom staff, to prevent further aggression towards the judge.
